Annual meeting of Northeast practitioners
The Northeast Region of the National Dental PBRN held its 1st annual regional meeting on Friday and Saturday, March 15 and March 16, 2013 at the Monroe Golf Club and the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, NY. Seventy-six National Dental PBRN dentists and dental hygienists from the Northeast Region participated in the two-day meeting. About 20 practitioners participated in the optional training session that included the National Dental PBRN orientation presentation and reading of the Belmont Report.
The event started with the Advisory Committee meeting on Friday afternoon, followed by a reception at the Monroe Golf Club. Dr. Paul Benjamin gave the keynote presentation entitled “Practice-Based Research Networks and Evidence Based Dentistry-Closing the Research to Practice Gap”. On Saturday morning, Drs. Donald Denucci and Dena Fisher presented an overview of the National Dental PBRN history and its future from the NIDCR perspective. Dr. Gregg Gilbert, the National Network Director, gave a presentation entitled “The National Dental PBRN: the Nation’s Network”. Dr. Gilbert spoke about the objectives, functioning and activities of the National Dental PBRN.
The next block of activities was introduced by Dr. Cyril Meyerowitz, the Northeast Regional Director. The first session “What Clinical Questions Can Become National Dental PBRN Research Questions and How Do These Become Research Studies?” started with the breakout sessions. Practitioners at each table developed two relevant clinical questions that may become research studies in the National Dental PBRN. Ms. Beth Mamo, Librarian from the University of Rochester presented the approach to interrogate the dental literature. Dr. Dorota Kopycka-Kedzierawski, Northeast Regional Deputy Director gave a presentation entitled “How a Clinical Question Becomes a Research Study in the National Dental PBRN”.
Dr. Julie Barna and Ms. Mary Therese Biltucci (Regional Coordinator) introduced the second break-out session “How Will a Study from the National Dental PBRN Fit into Daily Practice?” Practitioners shared their prior experiences with the implementation of the research studies into their practice routine.
The last session of the day comprised of three interesting presentations about previous studies conducted in the PEARL network and their results. Dr. Paul Benjamin presented the results of the study about “Replacement or Repairing Dental Restorations”. Drs. Aaron Rosen and John Martin presented the study entitled “Periodontal Diagnosis Affected by Variation in Terminology”. Dr. Allan Horowitz described the study entitled “Outcomes of Endodontic Therapy in General Practice”.
The day of activities concluded with the presentation given by Dr. Gregg Gilbert, Director of the National Dental PBRN that described the current research and studies that are currently in the pipeline.
Drs. Cyril Meyerowitz and Julie Barna wrapped up the meeting. All participants received certification for their participation in the inaugural Northeast regional meeting.
