National Dental PBRN posters and presentations at IADR meeting in Iguacu Falls, Brazil

The National Dental PBRN was represented at the 90th General Session and Exhibition of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), held this year in Iguaçu Falls, Brazil June 20-23, 2012. National Dental PBRN practitioner-investigators Dr. Alan Law and Dr. Ira Rabinowitz gave two important presentations on results from network studies “Peri-Operative and Persistent Pain and Root Canal Therapy.”

Dr. Law is an endodontist in private practice at The Dental Specialists in Lake Elmo, MN. He addressed “Feasibility of conducting large-scale endodontic research within The Dental PBRN.” Dr Law was an important stakeholder in the development of the study protocol and in the recruitment of both endodontists and general dentist colleagues to the network. “Engaged from the beginning,” he stated, “it was rewarding to have the opportunity to share the excellent patient response rates we achieved which were impressive to methodologists in the audience.”

Dr. Rabinowitz is a general dentist in private practice at Park Dental in St. Louis Park, MN. He spoke on “Peri-operative endodontic pain with The Dental Practice-Based Research Network,” focusing on patient-reported outcomes prior to, immediately after, and one week following RCT. “An international research meeting can be an intimidating speaking venue,” shared Dr. Rabinowitz, “I can say, now that it’s over, it was very enjoyable. I learned a lot in the process of preparing to present the results. It was a privilege to represent the practitioners and patients who were involved."

Dr. Don Nixdorf, Deputy Director of the Midwest Region and Principal Investigator for these network studies, accompanied the presenters. “The audience was very interested in hearing from actual practitioners,” said Nixdorf. Congratulations to the practitioner-investigator presenters and the study team for a job well done in this important area of research.
