Meet a National Dental PBRN researcher who praises our membership's positive impact on his dentistry and biomedical science career and studies.
Dr. Julie Barna: Transforming Dental Practices Through Research
At the National Dental PBRN, we collaborate to connect dental practitioners with researchers and conduct studies directly within dental practices. None of the research we conduct would be possible without the countless members of our practices, which consists of dentists, dental professionals, and students. These members all contribute to uncovering solid scientific evidence to enhance oral health.
Join us as we sit down with Dr. Julie Barna, a key figure in the National Dental PBRN, whose innovative research is paving the way for new advancements in dental health. Dr. Julie shares her personal journey into the world of dental research, discusses the exciting developments, and offers a glimpse into how these findings are set to revolutionize dental practices and patient care.
Tell us more about yourself. Where did you go to school, and what is your current position?
I have a diverse background in dentistry. I practiced in Lewisburg, PA, and also served as an assistant surgeon at a local hospital, where I became deeply involved in orthognathic surgery. This unique experience provided me with a different perspective compared to many dentists, as I was deeply connected to the medical community. My involvement in surgery broadened my understanding of various aspects of dentistry.
Additionally, I have been actively involved in volunteer work for the American Dental Association, including writing their national boards and various fellowship exams for different organizations. After 40 years in dentistry, I have retired and now work as an independent contractor. Orthognathic surgery is my specialty, not orthopedics—they’re two totally different things.
What made you decide to join National Dental PBRN?
I joined the National Dental PBRN because I was previously part of the Pearl network. I had the option to stay with Pearl or join National Dental PBRN- I chose National Dental PBRN because I believed it would offer me opportunities to learn more, meet interesting people, and benefit my patients.
How has National Dental PBRN helped you improve your skills?
I had previously been involved in volunteer work for the American Dental Association, including writing their national boards and various fellowship exams for different organizations. Since joining National Dental PBRN, I have met knowledgeable people who have helped me learn more about dentistry, research, and grants. I have improved my skills by gaining insights into how to work with patients, not just on them, and by staying informed about new practices and research.
How do the studies help you gain further insights into the dental profession?
Participating in studies allows me to learn about the entire dental profession from the perspectives of hygienists, patients, and doctors. It helps me understand what dentistry does for patients, not just for them. Additionally, it allows me to enjoy the profession on every level, from patient care to continuing research.
What advice do you have for future researchers looking to join National Dental PBRN?
I advise future researchers to dive right in, whether by answering surveys or signing up to do studies. I highly encourage them to communicate with staff, learn from others’ mistakes, and ask questions. It’s my firm belief that investing in the network pays back in terms of knowledge and benefits for both researchers and patients.
How has the organization expanded or enhanced your research capabilities?
Being part of the National Dental PBRN keeps me informed about developments in dentistry and provides insights into how to practice effectively. It offers additional resources and research findings that I can use to explain treatments to patients, enhancing my ability to provide quality care. It also helps me and my hygienist continue to learn and improve our skills.
How difficult might your research have been without your membership?
Without membership in National Dental PBRN, many dentists and professionals might rely solely on biased information from salespeople. The network provides unbiased research results and does not endorse specific products or labs, which I consider crucial for informed decision-making in dentistry.
Would you recommend membership to other researchers in the field? If so, why?
100%, yes. Joining the National Dental PBRN has been incredibly beneficial for me because it has offered opportunities to learn more and meet interesting people. The network has exposed me to knowledgeable individuals in dentistry, research, and grants, which has helped me improve my skills and broaden my understanding of the profession.
I believe that membership in the National Dental PBRN can greatly benefit patients. By participating in the network, researchers like myself gain insights into working with patients, not just performing procedures on them. This patient-centered approach fosters better care and outcomes.
The National Dental PBRN also provides a valuable platform for researchers to contribute to ongoing studies and advancements in dentistry. I encourage future researchers to dive into the program and engage in studies, as this involvement not only expands their knowledge but also contributes to the collective understanding of dental practices.
Being part of the National Dental PBRN keeps me informed about developments in dentistry and provides additional resources for informed decision-making. This access to unbiased research results and shared learning enhances my ability to provide quality care and improve patient outcomes.
