Join us as we discuss the journey of Seung Jin “James” Jang, a current researcher enrolled at the University of Florida.

Let’s start at the beginning. What’s your educational background and current position?

I am currently enrolled in the combined Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) and Ph.D. program at the University of Florida (UF), specializing in both dentistry and biomedical science. This comprehensive 7-year program, now in its final semester, merges dental education with a focus on biomedical research in Microbiology and Immunology. My ultimate career goal is to join the faculty at the University of Florida or other dental institutions in the Department of Orthodontics. To further my research experience, I intend to pursue additional training at Ohio State University. Currently, I am also applying for a residency program to expand my expertise.

My educational journey began at the University of Florida, where I developed a passion for science, particularly biochemistry. This passion steered me toward a career in biomedical research, and I actively volunteer at hands-on clinics, eager to contribute to underserved communities. Exposure to both medical and dental disciplines during my undergraduate years and my research experience at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), particularly the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), solidified my decision to pursue advanced studies at UF, where I was inspired by esteemed dental academicians.

Why did you join the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network (National Dental PBRN)? 

My decision to join the National Dental PBRN stemmed from a pivotal encounter with its leaders, where I learned about the challenges of translating evidence-based research to dental chairside. This organization plays a crucial role in expediting translational research and facilitating the adoption of innovative treatments in dental practices. Through National Dental PBRN, oral healthcare providers can actively contribute to initiatives such as prescription drug monitoring programs and oral cancer screening, ultimately enhancing patient outcomes by implementing evidence-based practices swiftly.

Tell me about your current or previous research involvement.

I have been actively involved in various research organizations, including the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) and the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (AADOCR), where I served as President of the National Student Research Group. The National Dental PBRN has been instrumental in honing my research skills, enabling me to bridge the gap between laboratory findings and clinical applications. As president of the AADOCR National Student Research Group, I am passionate about fostering a culture of research engagement among aspiring dental professionals and recruiting the next generation of dental academicians and researchers.

What have you learned from your National Dental PBRN studies?

Learning from The National Dental PBRN studies, such as the Oral Human Papillomavirus (HPV) screening study, has provided invaluable insights into preventive patient care. Witnessing patients’ willingness to undergo screenings underscores the significance of such initiatives in preventive dentistry. These studies not only enhance clinical practices but also empower clinicians and students alike to prioritize preventive measures, thereby reducing the burden of oropharyngeal cancer.

Do you have any advice for future researchers?

For aspiring researchers, I encourage active engagement with networks like National Dental PBRN, as they offer unparalleled opportunities to translate research findings into tangible clinical benefits. Aligning research endeavors with patient-centered goals increases the likelihood of securing NIH funding and achieving impactful outcomes. National Dental PBRN serves as a catalyst for bridging the gap between research and patient care, positioning researchers for success in improving healthcare delivery.

How has your membership impacted your research capabilities?

Access to insights from practicing dentists within National Dental PBRN has been instrumental in shaping my career trajectory, guiding me to strike a balance between clinical practice and research endeavors. By leveraging resources and shared learning within National Dental PBRN, I can make informed decisions regarding my research focus, ensuring its relevance and effectiveness in clinical settings.

The availability of past studies, networking opportunities with fellow researchers, and the prospect of securing NIH grants through National Dental PBRN membership significantly bolster research capabilities. By leveraging these resources, researchers can accelerate the pace of discovery, ultimately enhancing patient care and advancing the field of dentistry.
